For foreign exchange, the number of US dollars needed to buy one unit of a foreign currency. Bloomberg Financial Dictionary
————
A direct quote arises in the foreign currency markets where the variable currency is the US dollar and the other currency is fixed as one unit. For example, sterling is quoted directly against the dollar. This means that the quote is always expressed in terms of £1 and the number of dollars it takes to buy £1 or the number of dollars £1 will buy. Most currencies are quoted indirectly against the dollar, rather than directly. Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein financial glossary

Direct Quote: translation

A foreign exchange rate quoted as the domestic currency per unit of the foreign currency. In other words, it involves quoting in fixed units of foreign currency against variable amounts of the domestic currency.

For example, in the U.S., a direct quote for the Canadian dollar would be US$0.85 = C$1. Conversely, in Canada, a direct quote for U.S. dollars would be C$1.17 = US$1.
