   Born in Malden, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard University in 1900 and became a reporter on the Boston Herald. As drama critic, he wrote for the New York Tribune (1902-1907), the New York Sun (1907-1908), and American Magazine (1909-1918). From 1933, he taught play-writing at Yale University. Besides numerous books and articles on the theatre, he published widely on Boy Scouting and the outdoors.
