Demo
 
[abgeleitet von englisch Demonstration Tape], Bezeichnung für eine kostengünstig mit relativ geringem technischen Aufwand erstellte Tonbandaufnahme der Rohfassung von Musik, um sie in einer Form zur Verfügung zu haben, die Plattenfirmen oder Liveveranstaltern angeboten werden kann. Trotz ihrer zwangsläufig eingeschränkten klanglichen Qualität vermittelt sie doch eine ungefähre Vorstellung der Titel, die eine Entscheidung über die Eignung zur Studioproduktion zulässt. Da ausgeschriebene Notentexte bei den heutigen Formen der populären Musik nicht vorliegen und auch nicht viel aussagen würden, sind solche Demonstrationsaufnahmen zu einem unerlässlichen Hilfsmittel beim Bemühen um einen Tonträgervertrag geworden.
 
Wenn die Interpreten dann im Lauf der Jahre zu einer etablierten Größe auf dem Musikmarkt werden, gehört es gelegentlich zur Praxis, derartige Demo-Aufnahmen nachträglich als offizielle Tonträger herauszubringen. So erschienen z. B. 1994 unter dem Titel »The Official 1986 Demo« jene Aufnahmen, die die Band Dream Theater seinerzeit noch unter dem Namen Majesty eingespielt hatte.
 
Die Grenzen zwischen Demo, Eigenproduktion und offiziell vertriebenem Firmenprodukt beginnen seit Anfang der Neunzigerjahre zu verschwimmen. Angesichts zunehmender technischer Perfektion in kleinen Aufnahmestudios oder beim Home-Recording und gesunkener Kosten für »private« Vervielfältigung auf Kassette oder CD unterscheidet sich das eine vom anderen weniger in der Qualität als vielmehr in den vorhandenen Vertriebsmöglichkeiten.
