Mahir Cayan was a famous leader of Turkey's revolutionary left in the 1960s and early 1970s who served as a model for the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) leader Abdullah (Apo) Ocalan. An ethnic Kurd, Cayan led the Turkiye Halk Kur-tulus Partisi ve Cephesi (THKP-C), or Turkish Peoples Liberation Party and Front, which had grown out of Dev Genc. Cayan was also associated with Deniz Gezmis, another famous leader of the Turkish revolutionary left. After he helped to kidnap the Israeli ambassador to Turkey, Cayan was killed by Turkish security forces during a shootout at the village of Kizildere on 30 March 1972.
