   German author and art historican. He was born in Berlin and lived there until 1933, when he emigrated to Holland. After the Nazi invasion he was deported to Auschwitz, where he died. He published essays on fine art, sketches, novels and short stories. His fictional works portray cultivated Berlin Jews in the 19th century and modern Jewish intellectual life.
