(1864-1916)
Born in Philadelphia, the exuberant journalist and playwright earned the epithet "Beau Brummell of the Press." Renowned particularly as a war correspondent, he translated his experiences into short stories, which he then dramatized. Among his 20 or more plays to reach the stage were Soldiers of Fortune (1902), The Dictator (1904), and The Blackmailer (1912).
