Adalgisa f
Italian: of Germanic origin, composed of the elements adal noble + gisil pledge or hostage. It died out in the Middle Ages, but has undergone a minor revival since the 19th century as a result of the popularity of Bellini's opera Norma (1831), in which it is borne, inappropriately enough, by a Celtic priestess.
