   Hungarian writer. Born into a wealthy family of assimilated Hungarian Jews, he joined the communist party. After leaving Hungary, he lived in Czechoslovakia, Vienna, Paris and Italy. In 1926 he returned to Hungary where he was a co-editor of an activist review. When the Germans occupied Hungary in 1944, he went into hiding. After the war he rejoined the Hungarian communist party and published a cycle of stories. Later he published a two-volume novel, Felelet which was attacked by the communist authorities.
