   Born in Mons on 25 March 1784, François-Joseph Fétis studied and worked as a teacher and librarian in Paris. From 1833 until his death he served as the director of the Conservatoire royal de Musique in Brussels. He wrote compositions and other works, including Biographie universelle des musiciens (Universal biography of musicians [1833-1844]). Fétis died in Brussels on 26 March 1871. His library was purchased by the Belgian government in 1872.
