(1815-77)

   South African industri-alist. He arrived in South Africa in 1846 and played an important role in the development of coastal shipping. He founded the sealing, whaling and island gauano industries off the Cape Province. He brought the first Sepher Torah to Cape Town and helped build the synagogue there.
