   One of the founders of the Black Panthers social and economic protest movement. Biton was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and immigrated to Israel in 1949. He was elected to the 11th and 12th Knessets on the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (Hadash) list and led a campaign to have amnesty granted to prisoners (mainly poor Sephardim [see ORIENTAL JEWS]) incarcerated in Israeli prisons in 1998 to mark the country's 50th anniversary. Biton remains an advocate for improved social and economic rights for disadvantaged Israelis.
