  the idea that one factor can trigger a sequence of events which reinforce and amplify the entire process concerned. term coined by myrdal to explain economic disparity between regions whereby an initial advantage in one then draws in resources to improve the position of the region at the expense of those surrounding. also thought to work in reverse to explain economic decline.
