(1904-1987)
Director. Buckwitz was best known as "Bertolt Brecht's director" in West Germany during the boycotts against Brecht in the early 1950s. Buckwitz had been captured by the British in East Africa and repatriated during the war. He worked incognito in Lodz, Poland, as a hotel clerk until 1945, whereupon he returned to his native Munich. He remained there until 1951, when he became director of the Frankfurt City Theaters, and there he staged a series of widely admired Brecht productions, often with designs by Teo Otto.
