Communion: übersetzung

Communion, Gemeinschaft. Vereinigen wollte Jesus Christus durch seine Lehre die große Menschengesellschaft zu einer Gemeinschaft. Er wollte sie umschlingen mit dem Banden heiliger, brüderlicher Liebe. Er wollte, daß Brüder seien und Schwestern Alle, die da wohnen vom Aufgang bis zum Niedergang, und Einer fördere des Andern Heil und mildere des Andern Leid. Diese heilige Gemeinschaft, mehr noch sinnbildlich darzustellen, setzte Jesus bei der letzten Mahlzeit, welche er am Vorabende seines Todes mit seinen Jüngern genoß, die Feier einer Mahles ein, bei dessen Genusse sie sich seiner erinnern und die Gemeinschaft mit ihm erneuern sollten. Zu diesem Ende feierten die ersten Christen bei ihren religiösen Versammlungen ihre Liebes- oder Gastmahle f.Agapen. Sie priesen dabei in heiligen Gesängen die Wohlthat der Erlosuna, und ermunterten sich wechselseitig zur Standhaftigkeit und Treue im Glauben an den Herrn. Auf diesen Gebrauch stützt sich auch die Ansicht einiger Kirchenlehrer, daß man das Abendmahl nicht Einzelnen, z. B. Kranken, sondern nur in Versammlungen reichen solle. Später betrachtete man die Communion mehr als das öffentliche Bekenntniß, ein Christ zu sein und als die Inanspruchnahme der durch Christum erlangten Erlösung und göttlichen Gnade. Mithin ist die Communion das feierlichste Bundesmahl, das je begangen werden kann. Denn es ist die Weihe und Erneuerung des Bundes, für Wahrheit, Recht und Liebe zu leben, zu kämpfen und zu sterben.
