AMPHOTERICIN B
amphotericin B: translation
(= Fungizone)
Polyene antibiotic from Streptomyces spp. Used as a fungicide, it is cytolytic by causing the formation of pores (5-10 molecules of amphotericin in association with cholesterol) that allow passage of small molecules through the plasma membrane and thus to cytolysis. Only acts on membranes containing sterols (preferentially ergosterol, hence selectivity for fungi). See also filipin.
