⇒ (to talk, chat, think etc about) various things, all kinds of things (usu. used instead of enumerating various topics, circumstances, matters etc):

- this and that;

- this, that, and the other thing;

- one thing and another;

- [in limited contexts](occupy o.s. with <engage in etc> small talk;

- and all that.

     ♦ "Я угостила его [генерала] чем бог послал, разговорились о том о сём, наконец и о Дубровском" (Пушкин 1)."I treated him [the general] to whatever was in the house, and we talked about this and that, mentioning at last Dubrovskii, too" (1a).

     ♦ Что делать в потёмках? Стали разговаривать о том о сём. Она рассказывала про своего отца... И я стал рассказывать про свою жизнь (Трифонов 5). We had to do something, sitting there in the dark, and so we began talking about one thing and another. She told me about her father. ...Then I began telling her about my life (5a).
