[englisch, von portugiesisch ema di gei »Kranich der Erde« (wegen der Flugunfähigkeit des Vogels)] der, -s/-s, Dromaius novaehollạndiae, flugunfähiger, bis 1,8 m hoher, straußenähnlicher Vogel Australiens mit bräunlichem Gefieder.Der Lebensraum des Emus erstreckt sich von locker bewaldeten Gebieten bis zur Halbwüste. Die Nahrung besteht aus vielerlei Früchten, Knospen, Gras und Insekten. Der Emu kann auf kurzen Strecken rennend mehr als 50 km/h erreichen. Brut und Jungenaufzucht besorgt allein das Männchen. - Der Bestand ist in Australien gefährdet, auf Tasmanien, King Island und Kangaroo Island ausgerottet.
