Spanish: of uncertain origin. It may possibly derive from a popular form of Latin Hilarius (see HILARY (SEE Hilary)) or Hilarion (see ILLARION (SEE Illarion)). A saint variously known as Allyre or Illidius was a 4th-century bishop of Clermont: his name may be connected with this one.
