Equitatio: translation

A knight's service of riding with his lord, as an escort, between various places. The equivalent service in French was chevalchia. In the 10c, St Oswald used the phrase equitandi lex - law of riding - in a letter to King Edgar. Men granted Church lands were required to provide riding services for the bishop. -
