CASSINI, OLEG

(1913-2006)

   Born in Paris but raised in Italy, Cassini began as a sketcher for Jean Patou in Paris. He returned to Rome where he opened a custom-made clothing business. In 1936, he left for the United States with little else to his name than tennis racquets and a tuxedo. An unsuccessful first marriage to an heiress ended Cassini's days in New York and so he headed for Hollywood, where he began working as a costume designer. By 1950, he was back in New York and began Oleg Cassini Inc. on Seventh Avenue. Cassini was best known as the personal couturier to Jackie Kennedy, a U.S. first lady in the 1960s. He dressed Hollywood stars and socialites and also had the ability to make average women feel like stars in his clothing. He was also one of the first designers to recognize the importance of in-store appearances—and his charm and love of women only added to the success of these visits. In the menswear market, he was a key player in the introduction of vibrant colors and assisted in the Nehru jacket becoming a fashion trend. Cassini created elegant minimalism that was embraced by American women.
