['tʃɑːnsələ] der, -s/-s, Kanzler, Rektor einer Universität. In den USA auch Richter eines Chancery court (Gericht, das nach den Grundsätzen der Billigkeit entscheidet, Equity). Chancellor of the Exchequer, britisches Amt, das seit Heinrich III. besteht. Bis ins 19. Jahrhundert von wechselnder Bedeutung, ist der Chancellor of the Exchequer heute der Finanzminister (Schatzkanzler, Treasury); Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Kanzler des Herzogtums Lancaster, stimmfähiges Mitglied des engeren Kabinetts in Großbritannien; der Träger dieses Amtes wird häufig mit Sonderaufgaben betraut (Lord Chancellor).

['tʃɑːnsələ], Richard, englischer Seefahrer, ✝ vor der schottischen Küste Anfang November 1556; unternahm 1553/54 im Auftrag der Merchant Adventurers die erste Fahrt zur Suche nach einer nordöstlichen Durchfahrt (Nordostpassage) nach China.Er gelangte bis in die Mündung der Nördlichen Dwina und reiste per Schlitten nach Moskau. Er ist der eigentliche Entdecker Nordrusslands für das westliche Europa; seine Reisen waren Voraussetzung für die Eröffnung des englisch-russischen Handels (Entstehung der Moskowitischen Handelskompanie 1555).

Chancellor: translation
The office emerged during the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042-66), who followed the procedures of the *Carolingian court. The title means secretary; the post in time acquiring power and authority. Until the 14c the chancellor was invariably a priest, serving as royal chaplain and king's secretary in secular matters; also keeper of the royal seal, or *great seal as it is known. He controlled the *exchequer. Because of his legal work in *chancery, the chancellor became the country's chief legal officer; at the same time he presided in parliament, a position which changed somewhat when parliament became bicameral and the chancellor sat in the House of Lords.
