Adlai: translation

Adlai m
Biblical: name of a very minor character, the father of one of King David's herdsmen (1 Chronicles 27: 29). It represents an Aramaic contracted form of the Hebrew name Adaliah ‘God is just’. In recent times, it is particularly associated with the American statesman and Democratic presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson (1900–65), in whose family the name was traditional: it was also borne by his grandfather (1835–1914), who was vice-president in 1893–7.
