   Wrote Jewish liturgical works including Kol Nidre (1944), the cantatas Naomi and Ruth (1947) and The {}Queen of Sheba (1953), the biblical oratorios Ruth (1949), Jonah (1957), and Esther (1962), and a Sacred Synagogue Service (1943). Some secular works display Jewish influence, e.g., the Second Violin Concerto, entitled The Prophets (1938). (at)

   American composer of Italian origin. He was a member of an old Florentine family. He settled in Hollywood, where he wrote film music. In 1925 he found a notebook of Jewish melodies in his grandfather's house, which encouraged him to write Jewish compositions; his works on Jewish subjects include La danza del Re David, Tre corali su melodie ebraiche, The Prophets, Sacred Service, Ruth, Jonah, Naomi and Ruth and Saul.
