BERKMAN, ALEXANDER

   US anarchist. Born in Vilna, he emigrated to the US in 1888. He was a member of the Pioneers of Freedom, a Jewish anarchist group. Together with Emma Goldman, he led the anarchist movement in the US. In 1892, he shot the director of the steelworks as a protest against the treatment of workers. He was imprisoned, but later released. During World War I he was convicted of engaging in propa-ganda against conscription, and later deported to the USSR. He later left for Germany, and in 1925 settled in France.
