From the legend of the large wooden horse built by the Greeks and taken by the Trojans into their city as a gift. Later, the Greeks who had hidden inside the hollow horse climbed out, opened the gates of Troy to their army, and seized the city. Described in Homer's Odyssey (VIII, 492-520) and Virgil's Ae-neid (II, 45-49).
