Geschichte:

Ayr entstand um eine im 12. Jahrhundert erbaute Burg und erhielt 1202 Stadtrecht. Im Mittelalter war es der Haupthafen an der schottischen Westküste. Unter dem Eindruck des schottischen Sieges über die Engländer bei Bannockburn (1314) trat in Ayr 1315 das schottische Parlament zusammen und bestätigte Robert Bruce als König von Schottland.
