TH, Universitäten; Museen, Theater, Vergnügungsparks.

Wirtschaft:

Die Industrie umfasst fast alle Zweige; neben örtlichen Gründungen (z. B. 1886 der Coca-Cola Company) bestehen Zweigwerke der meisten großen Konzerne der USA (Lebensmittel-, Textil-, chemische Industrie, Metallverarbeitung).

Verkehr:

Verkehrsknotenpunkt (nach Chicago zweitgrößter Flughafen der Erde); Austragungsort der Olympischen Sommerspiele 1996.

Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt gehören »Underground Atlanta«, ein seit 1865 unter dem heutigen Straßenniveau liegendes Stadtviertel (restauriert und renoviert, 1988 wieder eröffnet), Georgia State Capitol (1884-89, vergoldete Kuppel; mit State Museum of Science and Industry), City Hall (1930, 1992 durch modernen Anbau erweitert).Ältester »Wolkenkratzer« von Atlanta ist das Flatiron Building (1897 erbaut). Weitere Bauten: Peachtree Center (Hochhausgruppe, 1961 ff., Entwurf: J. C. Portman junior), Omni Coliseum (Sporthalle), George L. Smith Georgia World Congress Center (1976, größtes Kongresszentrum der USA) und Georgia Dome (überdachtes Stadion, 1992 eröffnet), CNN Center, Gebäude der Nations Bank (341 m hoch; 1992 erbaut, Architekt: Kevin Roche), GLG Grand (Büro- und Wohnhochhaus sowie Hotel, 1992 eröffnet, Architekten: Joe Rabun, Ted Hatch). Zum Kulturzentrum Atlantas (Memorial Arts Center, 1968 fertig gestellt) gehört das High Museum of Art (u. a. Skulpturen der Kress Collection) in einem 1984 fertig gestellten Neubau von R. A. Meier. Auf dem Campus der Emory-Universität befindet sich das Michael C. Carlos Museum (1916, Entwurf von Henry Hornbastel, postmoderner Erweiterungsbau 1993 von M. Graves). Im Martin Luther King junior Historic District das Geburtshaus und (bei der Ebenezer Baptist Church) das Grabmal des Bürgerrechtlers und Friedensnobelpreisträgers M. L. King. Im Grant Park befindet sich in einem Marmorbau das »Cyclorama«, ein 15 m hohes und 122 m langes Rundgemälde zur Schlacht von Atlanta (1864). Östlich von Atlanta ist im »Stone Mountain Memorial State Park« ein 1923-70 aus einem Granitblock herausgemeißeltes Reiterrelief (24 × 50 m) zu sehen, das die Führer der Südstaatenkonföderation darstellt.

Geschichte:

1837 unter dem Namen Terminus als Eisenbahnstation gegründet; 1843 in Marthasville, 1845 in Atlanta umbenannt. Im Sezessionskrieg Schauplatz heftiger Kämpfe, wurde die Stadt 1864 durch den Unionsgeneral W. Sherman niedergebrannt. Seit 1868 ist Atlanta Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Georgia.
