A semicircular stone or marble seat; a rectangular or semicircular recess; the portico of the Grecian palæstra, or gymnasium, in which disputations of the learned were held among the ancients; also, in private houses, the parastas, or vestibule, used for conversation.The term is sometimes applied to a porch or chapel which projects from a larger building. Also used, as synonymous with cathedra, for a throne or seat of any kind; for a small private chamber; the space between an oriel window and the small chapels between the buttresses of a large church or cathedral.

[griechisch, eigentlich »draußen gelegener Sitz«] die, -/...'edren, in der Antike ein halbrunder oder rechteckiger Sitzplatz im Freien; auch ein nischenartiger Raum (meist mit Sitzbänken) als Erweiterung eines Saals oder einer Halle (Thermen, Gymnasion, Basilika) oder ein überdeckter Raum, der sich frei oder mit einer Säulenstellung auf einen Hof oder Platz öffnet. In der frühchristlichen Basilika wurde die Exedra übernommen (später als Apsis bezeichnet).

Exedra: übersetzung

Exedra, bei antiken Bauten ein Ausbau, der am häufigsten die Form eines Kreissegmentes annahm und als Versammlungs- oder Vorlesungsraum diente und dann mit Bänken an den Wänden ausgestattet war, wie man dies namentlich bei den römischen Badeanlagen häufig findet. Auch bei den altchristlichen Bauten in ähnlichem Sinne als Haupt- oder Nebenapsis gebraucht.
