EUCHEL, ISAAC
(1756-1804)
German Hebrew author and Bible commentator of Danish origin. He became a leader of the Haskalah in Germany. He was born in Copenhagen and in 1787 settled in Berlin, where he managed the printing press of the Jüdische Freischule. His writings include a comedy, satirizing Orthodoxy, a study of Moses Mendelssohn, a trans-lation of and commentary on the book of Proverbs, and a German translation of the prayerbook.
