French: altered form of CHRISTINE (SEE Christine), derived by replacement of the seemingly feminine diminutive suffix -ine with the suffix -elle of similar function. The name is now also used in the English-speaking world, where its popularity has been enhanced by that of the similar-sounding CRYSTAL (SEE Crystal).
