Italian: from the name of the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal Barca (d. c.207 BC), brother of Hannibal (see ANNIBALE (SEE Annibale)). The name is composed of the Phoenician elements asru aid (related to EZRA (SEE Ezra)) + the divine name Baal ‘lord’. As a given name in Italy, this is not as common as ANNIBALE (SEE Annibale) and AMILCARE (SEE Amilcare).
