Irish: Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Fionnb(h)arr, composed of the elements fionn white, fair + barr head. This was the name of at least three early Irish saints, one of whom became the first bishop of Cork in the 6th century. He is the subject of many legends, for example that he crossed the Irish Sea on horseback and that he made a pilgrimage to Rome with St David. He gave his name to the Isle of Barra in the Hebrides.
