Term introduced by Derrida, combining the French for ‘difference’ and ‘deferral’. It is used to suggest both the Saussurean emphasis on meaning as the function of differences or contrasts within a network of terms, and also the endless deferral of any final fixed point or privileged, meaning-determining relationship with the extra-linguistic world.
