BOND, WARD

(1903–1960)
Born Warell E. Bond in Nebraska, Ward Bond became one of the standard members of the John Ford “Stock Company,” appearing regularly in the John Ford and John Wayne Westerns of the 1940s and 1950s. No doubt his best role was that of Rev. Captain Samuel Johnson Clayton in The Searchers (1956). Unfortunately, Bond is probably most remembered not for his character parts but for his relentless pursuit, along with Wayne, of communists in the Hollywood film community during the 1950s, as president of the super-conservative Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals.
