   Anders was born in Los Angeles, studied at Columbia University in New York, and made his debut in Los Angeles in 1910. He worked with various stock companies, toured with Julia Marlowe, and began getting important roles in New York in 1919. Notably, Anders played Joe in They Knew What They Wanted (1924) and Edmund Darrell in Strange Interlude (1928). Besides matinee-idol good looks, he demonstrated considerable range in his characterizations.
