FANO, JOSEPH

(c. 1550-1630)

   Italian communal leader. He was on familiar terms with dukes of Mantua and Ferrara and occasionally acted as their intermediary. Some time before 1628 he was raised to the rank of Marquis of Villimpenta. He was the first Jew to be ennobled in Europe.
