AGAM, YAKOV

(b. 1928)

   Israeli painter and sculptor. He was born in Rishon le Zion. He was the first to introduce geometrical abstraction into Israeli art. From the early 1950s he produced exper-imental works involving techniques and concepts of his own invention, such as 'simultaneous writing' in which superimposed words suggested multiple ideas to the viewer. In later works he used electrical motors to produce movement and change of composition, as well as light and sound effects. Some of his work contains traditional Jewish symbols.
