   Originally known as the Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, the Congress of People’s Deputies was the supreme governing body of Russia from 1990 until 1993 when it was abolished by Boris Yeltsin in the midst of the constitutional crisis of 1993. It was succeeded by the bicameral Federal Assembly of Russia. The Congress was responsible for electing the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation, a legislative body that governed the country between the congressional sessions.
