   American baseball executive, and creator of the modern World Series. Born in Freiburg, he emigrated to the US in 1881 and settled in Paducah, Kentucky. He worked in a distillery. Later he acquired an interest in the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1903 he proposed that the American League's leading Boston team should meet the Pirates in the best of nine series. This led to the creation of the World Series.
