[amerikanisch, 'duː'wɔp], auch Rhythm and Gospel, von der amerikanischen Musikpresse nachträglich geprägte Bezeichnung für den gospelbeeinflussten Rhythm and Blues schwarzer Vokalgruppen (Rhythm and Blues), der in der zweiten Hälfte der Fünfzigerjahre zeitweilig eine große Popularität besaß. Der Begriff geht auf die von diesen Gruppen häufig benutzten lautmalerischen Vokalisen zurück, um der Leadstimme (Lead) einen vokalen Background zu unterlegen. Typische Vertreter waren z. B. die Chords (»Sh-Boom«, 1954), die Clovers (»Love Potion Nr. 9«, 1959), die Drifters (»Save the Last Dance for Me«, 1960), die Platters (»Only You«, 1955) oder die Shirelles (»Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow«, 1960).
